A common challenge with tactile inspection is maintain and cleaning the stylus. In order to avoid measurement errors and influences of dirt and dust on the stylus sphere, it is recommended to clean the styli regularly. This is usually done manually and decreases machine utilization.

Rubbing with cleaning solutions or using compressed air often charge the styli electrostatically and are thus useless as this attracts more dust and similar contamination. On smaller stylus, this cleaning process may require the stylus to be re-qualified, leading to more down time.

The brush’s cleaning effect is primarily due to the fact that the fibers remove static electricity from the stylus system, preventing dust and similar contaminants from adhering to the stylus. To achieve this, the brush must be properly grounded.
